The old K’s Merchandise building on 86th St. in Urbandale has sat vacant so long that many people many not even remember it as “the old K’s Merchandise building”. Many have long wondered who would eventually purchase the building and what it would become. At long last, the question is now answered.
Hy-Vee has just announced it has purchased the 81,936 s.f. building to transform it into a new education and training center for its employees, as well as a new Hy-Vee Ailes Online home. We think that’s great news!
The $3.6 million purchase was completed on March 3. Some work on the building has already started with the main renovation work planned to start later this spring.
The education center is expected to open this fall and feature a teaching kitchen, lab area and 150 seat auditorium.
“We are excited to have a creative environment and innovative tools to help grow our future store leaders,” said Denise Broderick, vice president of education/training for Hy-Vee in a news release. “We understand that growing and improving our workforce is crucial to our company’s continued success. This center for education and training shows our dedication and investment in our employees.”
The building will also be home to the company’s online grocery division called Hy-Vee Aisles Online. The service allows customers to order online and either have the groceries delivered or pick them up at the store.
