If you haven’t yet heard of “tiny homes”, you may hear more about them soon and one company behind them. Aptly named TinyHomes.com and located about 30 minutes outside Portland, Oregon, the company’s website explains the vision of its co-founder, Kenny Bavoso: “I believe thoughtfully crafted, artful homes are a way to take a peek back in time, as you look to the future, creating new space. Each home sold is a portable, one of a kind, hand made creation.”
Other people build them on their own, constructing free-standing homes or converting old buses, trailers or even shipping containers.
The homes are what you may expect from the name, but we are talking very tiny – typically 500 square feet or less. You can see one example in the picture accompanying this post.
And now advocates of tiny homes – and the people who want to live in them – are looking to locate in the greater Des Moines area. But they are facing some legal hurdles like building codes, zoning ordinances, and other municipal rules and regulations.
For more information, read this article from the Des Moines Register about tiny home owners searching for a town to live in.
What do you think? Are tiny homes one wave of the future? Do they provide a great option for young people looking for their first residence? Or would you rather not see them in your town? Tell us in the comments section below.
